W32/Dumaru Worm

 Information about the W32/Dumaru Worm:

W32/Dumaru is an email worm. This worm will infect Windows systems. This worm infects Windows PE files. This worm also drops an IRC Trojan. The worm spreads through email.

The worm arrives with the infected email having the from address as;

security@microsoft.com

The subject of the infected mail will be;

Use this patch immediately !

The body of the mail will be;

Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now!
There are dangerous virus in the Internet now!
More than 500.000 already infected!

The infected attachment will have the name;

patch.exe

Upon execution of the attachment, it copies itself in different names to the following folders;

Windows\dllreg.exe
Windows\System\load32.exe
Windows\System\vxdmgr32.exe

It modifies the registry at the following location to load itself during the next startup.

Windows 9x/Me machines;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Run\

Windows XP/2000 machines;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Windows

The worm drops an IRC Trojan and creates a remote access through TCP 6667 and permit the remote user to

The worm tries to collect all the email addresses found in the files having the following extensions;

.abd
.dbx
.htm
.html
.tbb
.wab

and stores these addresses in winload.log in Windows folder. The worm tries to mail itself to these email addresses using its own SMTP engine.

This worm first appeared on 9th August 2003.
