 Information about the W32/Netsky.P worm:

W32/Netsky.P is a mass mailing worm. This worm is a variant of W32/Netsky.This worm infects Windows systems and spreads through email and shared network drives.

The worm exploits a vulnerability affecting Internet Explorer involving incorrect MIME Header, which allows the automatic execution of email attachments while an email is previewed or read.

The infected email carries a spoofed 'From' address, picked up from the infected system.

The subject of the infected email will be any one of the following;

Re:Hello
Re:Notify
Stolen document
Private document
Postcard
Re:Question
Re:document
Re:Extended Mail System
Re:Proctected Mail System
Mail Delivery

The body of the infected mail will be from a predefined multiple sets maintained by the worm.

The infected email has an attachment with an extension .pif, .scr, .exe, .zip along with any one of the following names;

your_document
websites(variable number)
postcard_.(variable number)
part(variable number)
old_photos message
document(variable number)
document details(variable number)

Upon execution of the infected attachment, the worm copies itself as FVPROTECT.EXE in the Windows folder.

The worm also creates the following files in the Windows folder:

zip3.tmp
zip2.tmp
zip1.tmp
zipped.tmp
base64.tmp
userconfig9x.dll

The worm modifies registry at the following location to run itself at the startup;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

It checks for the following words

upload
shared files
shar
my shared folder
mule
htdocs
ftp
download
donkey
bear
morpheus
lime
kazaa
icq
http

in the available shared folders in both local and network. If found the worm copies itself to these folders using the following filenames;

To propagate itself, the worm scans the files having the following extensions and collects all the available email addresses from the infected system;

.pl, .rtf, .oft, .txt, .uin, .jsp, .tbb, .cgi, .sht, .vbs, .doc, .dbx, .asp, .adb, .php, .htm, .eml, .xml, .wab, .wsh, .msg, .html, .dhtm, .shtm

The worm does not mail itself to email addresses containing the following strings:
