W32/Stration.G Worm

 Information about the W32/Stration.G Worm:

W32/Stration.G is a mass mailing worm. This worm is a variant of W32/Stration.A. The worm will infect Windows systems and spreads through email.

The infected email carries any one of the following from address. It may also include some random characters to it.

The 'Subject' of the infected mail will be any one of the following.

test
hello
Error
Status
picture
Good Day
Server Report
Mail Delivery System
Mail Transaction Failed

The body of the infected mail will be any one of the following;

Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available.
The message contains Unicode characters and has been sentas a binary attachment.
The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encodingand has been sent as a binary attachment

The name of the infected attachment will be any one of the following;

doc
body
data
file
docs
test
text
readme
message
document

The infected attachment will have double extensions, The first extension can be any one of these;

.log
.elm
.msg
.txt
.dat

The second extension can be any one of these;

.bat
.cmd
.scr
.exe
.pif

It may also have blank spaces in between first and second extensions.

Upon execution of the infected attachment, the worm copies itself as tsrv.exe in Windows folder.

It also copies tsrv.s, tsrv.dll and tsrv.wax in Windows folder and cmut449c14b7.dll, hpzl449c14b7.exe and msji449c14b7.dll in Windows System folder.

The worm modifies registry at the following location to load itself during each startup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To propagate itself, the worm scans the infected systemn for the following extensions and collects all the available email addresses and mails itself to these addresses using its own SMTP engine.

dbx, dhtm, adb, asp, cfg, cgi, eml, mbx, htm, html, jsp, mmf, msg, mdx, mht, nch, ods, oft, stm, php, pl, sht, shtm, tbb, txt, xls, uin, wab, wsh and xml

It attempts to connect to the following website to download a file

http://yuhadefunjinsa.com/ [blocked]

It also denies updates to some of the antivirus software by altering the hosts file in the infected computer.

This worm first appeared on September 10, 2006.
